I've got a wheel headache (*cough*).
The plans call for 2x 20mm through axle disc brake hubs with 36 spoke holes for use on the front of the trike. To save me from spending £60 a piece on some shiny Hope items, some serious eBaying has been going down. Most MTB wheels nowadays are 32H, so throwing 36H in the equation rapidly dried up the search results.
I managed to find a seller (in Portugal) stocking some Formula downhill hubs for £30 each, posted.
I've used Formula hubs before when they have come fitted as OEM items, and to be fair, they aren't too bad. Sure they aren't Hope quality or high on the bling scale, but they've always done a half decent job. Ordered. Some more bits ticked off the list!
Took an old rear Specialized hub to work to strip and refurb. Should take a couple of dinner breaks to sort that out, the free hub body is somewhat stiff. :(
Hubs need rims. I have some brand new Halo 4XR rims hanging up in the garage that I won 3 years ago for finishing first overall in the Masters class of the "Chicksands Winter 4X Series".
Never thought i'd ever get round to building them into wheels, but this seems like an ideal opportunity to put one to good use.
That leaves front rims.
Some more eBaying led me to a seller call bankrupt_bike_parts who had a pair of 36H white BMX rims on their listings for £30.
They just happened to be 15 minutes drive away in Cradley Heath. They buy stock from bike shops all over the world that are going out of business and sell this stock from their warehouse via the wonders of eBay. A phone call and a quick razz over in the car and they were bagged. Nice looking rims. Not a nicely finished as the 4XR for the rear, but once they are laced up with black spokes, they should look the business.
Things are moving along nicely. Hope the metal gets here for the weekend.
